I am an abstract artist driven by the desire to interpret the world through the most fundamental elements of space, color, and composition. Guided by intuition, I free myself from the constraints of reason and rely on my inner rhythm to achieve harmony within the work. Balancing intention and spontaneity, I juxtapose order with chaos. Using tools such as palette knives, brushes, rags, and print blocks, I conceptualize my work through sweeping motions and tightly executed details while color variation and texture enhance the impact of each piece. I approach my work with a consistent philosophy, exploring multiple interconnected series that reflect my ongoing artistic evolution.

Working on my representational images of trees or on the large scale graphic abstract paintings,  I maintain a relationship using color and shape as a connecting element.  By demonstrating this relationship rather than the objects themselves and stripping away inessential elements from the paintings, a reduction in the representation of reality is achieved. Using a limited palette and a repetitive pattern, I  explore the coupling of free movement within boundaries.

In my Tree  series, vibrant colors are joined with a simple composition and  multiple panels. The work invites the viewer to embark on a visual journey as I create a dynamic, shifting visual field. Colors move forward and recede, causing the foreground and background to interchange as if an illusion. Negative space becomes as important as the trees themselves, with textured layers and precise lines enhancing the image.

In contrast, my Sphere series shifts focus from linear forms to the exploration of the circle. Here, the object is freed from the expectations typically assigned to color, and geometric elements, spherical and linear, are presented with a distorted perspective.  An orb looms large and close, trees rise, slender and powerful as they climb an impossible distance. The image itself is one of calm but the painting is teeming with dynamic energy. My creative process includes working on several paintings simultaneously, as the paintings grow from one another creating a visual dialogue between the pieces.

I draw inspiration from the works of Piet Mondrian and his graphic abstraction, as well as the color fields of Mark Rothko. Mondrian’s use of color and the purity of his forms, alongside Rothko’s expansive regions of color, have shaped my aesthetic vision. I am drawn to the  transformative power of a slight shift in line or shape and how it alters the perception of the entire image. The philosophy of Johannes Itten, the Bauhaus color theorist, resonates with my approach: “The end and aim of all artistic endeavor is liberation of the spiritual essence of form and color and its release from imprisonment in the world of objects.” This principle drives my work as I demonstrate the relationship of color and shape rather than the objects themselves as I strip away inessential elements from the paintings, achieving  a reduction in the representation of reality.

Primarily a self-taught artist, I received some formal training through the Syracuse University School of Art summer program and at the Art Student’s League of New York. I graduated from Binghamton University in 1992, earning an undergraduate degree in Spanish and went on to earn a master’s degree in social work from Adelphi University, all the while maintaining a strong connection to my artistic practice.  I am the  chair of the Exhibition Committee at the Gallery on the Green in Canton, Connecticut and served as the gala chair of the New Britain Museum of American Art from 2020 - 2024. My work can be found in galleries, juried exhibitions, art festivals and even on local craft beer cans, as well as being included in corporate and private collections. While living in Manhattan I painted the New York City Marathon mural finish line artwork in Central Park.  Currently I maintain a studio in my home and begin each day realizing my artistic vision.
